So it’s late, I have a service to plan, a talk to write and some sleep to get however on my distracted journey here is a few CD Reviews of albums I’ve bought lately.
Matt Redman - Beautiful News
Beautiful News is Matt Redman’s first album since Facedown and his first studio album since ‘Where Angels Fear To Tread’. I bought this album having been to Soul Survivor and loved a couple of songs on it. The album has plenty of songs which will be new to most people so don’t buy it expecting to sing along straight away, however after much listening this is an awesome album, I don’t think there is another ‘Blessed Be Your Name’ on it, but maybe that’s a good thing! My favourite song on the album is Never Let Go and despite the corny ‘Oh No’ in the song the song is awesome.
On a sidenote, being at Soul Survivor helped me understand the point of the na na’s in ‘Undignified’!
The Starting Line - Direction
The Starting Line are an american pop-punk group who’ve been around a good few years now, I saw them in Norwich supporting MxPx last March and they were awesome, their very unique style of pop-punk takes some getting used to but this (their new album) is pretty good, it still feels like The Starting Line but is much better produced than their other albums and a bit heavier too which is good, plus amazing album artwork!
MxPx - Secret Weapon
The final album in my random list of reviews is the latest release from Christian punk act MxPx, 15 years since their first album the band continue to impress and write awesome songs. Panic (their previous release) showed the band getting more punk than pop-punk and the heaviness was awesome, this continues on secret weapon with heavy, fast songs which is awesome showing that MxPx are still one of the best bands around! This album is probably their best yet.
If you readers want to hear selections of these albums I’ve put a couple of tracks from each on the mp3 player! Enjoy!

So, it’s been a few days since I arrived home from Soul Survivor and I thought it would be worth posting a few thoughts.
Firstly I’d like to start by saying that I was very impressed. Soul Survivor is the first big Christian festival I’ve been to and I went not knowing what to expect, I guess I expected plenty of hype, I expected the Holy Spirit to be doing things and I expect loud worship.
Out of my expectations listed above I got two of them, I got loud worship and got to see the Holy Spirit working, my biggest surprise was the lack of hype, I guess I’m used to any church that does Holy Spirit stuff hyping it up, whether it’s with people speaking in tongues down microphones or just really influencial music. However at Soul Survivor there was none of it, Mike Pilavachi literally said a couple of words then people came and prayed for the people who came down and all they prayed was ‘God do your work’ or words to those effect, which was pretty cool.
I got to go to a couple of seminars by the legend that is Tim Hughes, one on song writing and one on worship leading, they were both really interesting and Tim had some really good points to make.
Another thing I liked about Soul Survivor was that time didn’t bother them, if a meeting over-ran because God was working and it meant the band who were playing a gig there in the evening wouldn’t be on till later it didn’t matter.
My only real issue with SS was the toilets, I was happy with a week of portaloos on the whole although by the end of the week some did have some interesting smells!
I think next year I’m going to volunteer for SS, that way it’s free! ![]()

The last week or so I’ve managed to catch quite a few Jeremy Kyle Shows, for those of you who don’t know what it is it’s a chat show hosted by Jeremy Kyle that covers all sorts of issues from cheating partners, troublesome teenagers right up to people not knowing who their parents are. It gives chances for DNA tests and provides after show councilling and follows up the people who’ve been on the show.
I’ve been finding the ones with teenagers in particually interesting from a Youth Work perspective, also, as I sit here typing I’m watching a special one on ITV2 where Jeremy moves into a poor neighbourhood for 3 days and has to live on the amount someone with benefits would, it’s quite interesting and also scary to see the traps some people get in, whereby of they worked anymore than they currently do they’d lose their benefits and be worse off, these people live in a vicious circle which is something working with the Princes Trust teams is something else I’ve realised.
I recommend the Jeremy Kyle show, it’s usually on around half 9 on ITV1
