Cafe Kindness

June 26th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Christianity

It’s been really cool this week to have been along to ‘Cafe Kindness’ at church, basically this week we’re opening up church and turning it into a free coffee and free cake shop so-to-speak. There’s been some good conversations with completely random people, however it’s surprising the amount of people who turn down free coffee and cake.

The Web Browser Battle

June 25th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles

Over the last few years the battle to be the ‘Users Web Browser’ has begun, we’ve always had the Netscape vs. Internet Explorer war but in the last few years Mozilla’s Firefox has become hot competition, along with smaller browsers such as Avant, the internet explorer plugin, Flock - firefox with photobucket uploading ability and other browsers such as opera.

In the last few weeks however Apple have jumped on the band wagon and released their Mac browser (Safari) on Beta release for windows.
So how is it as a web browser? For starters it has the massive advantage of not being made by Microsoft, which means it’ll work and it won’t clog up or kill your pc.
Following a similar look to itunes you have the sexy blue scroll bars, slim grey look (which grows on you, if you use itunes you’ll be at home straight away). Of course like all web browsers it offers tabbed browsing meaning the windows start bar doesn’t get clogged up and you can view all your windows in one browser. It automatically imports bookmarks from firefox and here’s the best bit, it’s actually fast!
Obviously any web browser is faster than internet explorer but Safari seems to beat even firefox! It also looks much nicer.
However despite Safari being the Jennifer Aniston of the web browsing world I think I’m still going to stick with firefox, not out of habit, but merely because it’s more established, there are loads of plugins for firefox and with a RSS reader plugin I can do anything in it, by adding the ‘Isafari’ theme from the Mozilla site it can even look like Safari. Safari is a good fast browser, however just doesn’t have the features at the moment, but if you want a simple, fast browser that isn’t going to slow down your computer, kill your computer and doesn’t look like a dead pidgeon then use firefox or safari.

Dry Spell

June 22nd, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Uncategorized

I’m sorry there hasn’t been anything really worth while to read here, I’m having a bit of a dry spell with blogs (on anything thoughtful anyway!), same goes for lyrics, need fresh inspiration!

Had the Survival 3 legged meal tonight, basically you have 3 courses, 3 locations and the young people have to go between them with a partner 3-legged-style! It’s all good fun.

Also having spent two days trawling around peterborough I finally found a pink shirt, which means I’m now read for Joanna’s prom on thursday, I’m really looking forward to it, I’ve never been to one or done a proper dressed up night before :)

Not a lot else happening this week, Church has operation kindness so we’ve been praying for it this week, next week we’re opening the church to give away free coffee and cake, also got a toddler dad’s group tomorrow and some people are cleaning the streets of litter before church on sunday, so it should all be good.

Got just over 2 weeks left in Peterborough before I finish for the summer, not huge amounts to do but I know there are some things that need sorting before I go.

Anyway life update over (not that any of you wanted to know)!

June 19th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Ethical Living/ Fairtrade, Uncategorized

There’s now a fairtrade link/ logo on the blog to the right…everyone go fairtrade…and whilst you’re at it abandon the big banks and go with the CO-OP or Smile, they tell you what happens to your money and it’s not mean, doesn’t involve making weopons and is generally much better!

procrastinating again

June 19th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Christianity, Church, Just For Fun

I’m so bored, I really want to blog but can’t think of a topic, I had a fun weekend at home, got to see lots of people :)

I’m still thinking about church and love, and also evangalism and love after the pastor of Tab yelled at a drunk guy telling him he was going to hell, sorry but that is not the way to evangalise…for goodness sake find some sense, tell people they’re going to hell doesn’t work nor help. Why not chat to the guy, find out why he is completely plastered at 6pm on a sunday, help him through problems so that he sees the church as a positive thing, not some daft organisation that tells him he is going somewhere he probably doesn’t even believe in….grrr churches annoy me sometimes, where is the love?!

Church

June 14th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Christianity

Firstly I know all has been quiet on my blog…not as quiet as Hayley’s Blog but still quiet, in fact lots of people seem to have bloggers block.

I’ve been thinking a lot about church recently, stemming from several things really, I’ve been thinking a lot about my Tab days and how I miss the sort of church that you got there, I’ve been thinking a lot about Park Baptist (my home church) and how although it has faults it’s certainly getting closer to being the church I believe the New Testament talks about and the sort of church Jesus would be happy with, I’ve also been thinking a bit about how I miss church, quite often I think Park Road feels like work, and I’m thinking perhaps next year I need to try and escape to other churches in some evenings (perhaps one a month or something).

I’ve also been thinking once again on Proclaimers Church, and have signed up to their podcast which has some sermons you can download and listen to…and they’re pretty good, I listened to one the other night and pretty much agreed with all of it.

If you’re wondering where all this is going then let me help you out, church comes in different shapes and sizes and in all sorts of different styles but as long as it still preaches the message of Jesus it is church.

However I’ve been thinking on something Chedz said to me which was basically ‘If God didn’t show up one sunday morning to church would we notice?’. I think that poses an interesting question, one of my aims when I do church is to try and do something different however I’ve been falling into the sandwich trap, whereby you end up structuring a service exactly the same as it is always done and I think too often in church we’re confided by times, and thoughts of how old Dorris will complain if we don’t have a organ hymn, or if we go on for too long, and I think more often than not if God didn’t show up we wouldn’t notice (I’m trying to be general here not specific, so Park Baptist for example I think would notice, as would Tab).

The fact is this, we’ve made church into something confortable, it’s cosy, there’s no surprises, you go in, sit down, sing a couple of songs, listen to talk, have some coffee and go home, church is too confortable. One way which I look at the teachings of Jesus is that he made people unconfortable…and not just a little bit he made them very unconfortable but at the same time challenged, he gave them somewhere to go from their unconfortability. Paul does the same in his letters.

However it seems that more often than not church is too confortable, I go into church knowing what to expect, preachers often think carefully about their words so they don’t offend, I think Jesus probably offended quite a few people so why are our churches today scared to offend?

I don’t know of a solution, but I think we need to make church unconfortable, I want church to be a place where I’m challenged, where I’m inspired and I want it to be a place where the love of God is experienced, not just from the church to the outside world but within the church, when did Jesus ever care about a building? or children running inside a church? He didn’t!

So they let her out…

June 7th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Just For Fun, Media

News article Link - This article on the BBC shares how Paris Hilton was released after just 3 days due to a medical condition (probably make-up withdrawal symptons), she has however been tagged for 40! Though I don’t think they need to, the press seem to follow her quite well!

Unfortunately this means my hopes of them losing the key and forgetting about her didn’t come true, actually she should have been put into a proper jail and been left at the peril of butch lesbian prisoners!

Oh well, life goes on…also I read today that one of the Big Brother contestants has been thrown out for using inappropriate language…oh how the world is now sure to come to it’s end…[/sarcasm]

Post Secret

June 3rd, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Uncategorized

A month or so ago Laura posted a couple of things from Post Secret onto her blog, since then I’ve been reading the Post Secret blog weekly, basically people write down a secret on a postcard, usually over a topical image and send them in, it’s really interesting, here’s one from this weeks set
‘I’m jelous of religious people because I wish I could believe like them’

For some reason this one is particually thought provoking, not sure why (probably because I’m still attempting to avoid my essay!), but I wonder how many people that is true for, how many people wish they could have a belief like ‘religious’ (oh how I hate that word) do.

On a more general me kinda note I led the service this morning with Chris and Aaron taking part of the sermon each and it went really well, I’m finding leading worship a lot easier these days, I think I’m slightly more confortable with the microphone concept…not sure if I was going through the system though!

London Night!

June 1st, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Just For Fun

Yesterday was the last day of the term at uni in London, it was the last time we’d see some of the second years so we thought it was a good excuse to go into London after uni, so 20 Students entered London (well, moved around London, we were already in!), starting at the Elephant and Castle Weathspoons, moving onto a Pub in Holborn then a Vodka Bar in Holborn, at the end it was just me, Ian and Sarah staying till the very end eventually leaving each other around midnight!

Here’s some photos…

Sign from the outside of the Vodka Bar! (made me laugh)
Dave wearing Esther’s Grandma’s Underwear
Sara and the shot glasses!

So that’s first year of uni, it’s gone quick but it’ll be nice not to be getting up half six twice a week and the night out was great.
