Big Brother

May 31st, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Media

So last night people’s lives were changed…or rather lost as millions tuned back into the reality world, waste of life that is ‘Big Brother’, Big Brother is one of those programmes which bugs me because of the very principal of it, channel 4 seem content on playing God and much like the sims we seem to like watching (by we I mean everyone but me).

To me the concept of Big Brother is much like having consenting sex with someone who’s drunk and then taking advantage whilst they sleep (which I haven’t done). By this I mean, it’s something that is morally wrong yet as a society we accept it (other than the sleeping bit!) because it’s almost been promoted as ‘ok’. Channel 4’s relationship with the contestants/ no-hopers is similar.

Channel 4 get permission from these people to let them into the Big Brother house then once people are there they take it one step too far. The choice of housemates is obviously meant to lead to trouble creating a surreal world where people who are so completely different are all thrust into one place, stuck together. (perhaps much like church!!!).

The more I hear about Big Brother the more I think it’s channel 4 exploiting people, the contestants, although consenting are really only consenting because of 2 things:
1- The chance to win money at the end
2- The possibility of fame

In our culture fame and money seem to be given priority by people which of course is why people agree to taking part (or at least I suspect a lot of the reason).

I guess this blog is slightly more constructive than my Big Brother blog a while ago, however my view point remains, Big Brother is the biggest waste of time you could possibly find, it exploits people and causes people to waste their lives away either watching or being part of it.

Top 5’s are so last year…

May 30th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Just For Fun, Top 5

I was just reading what I’d put alongside my top 5 good mornings and by Tammin Sursok I put ’songs suck’ however having had her album for a few months I’m going to disagree with myself and advise that you all listen to some Tammin Sursok, she’s kinda like a poppier yet still rocky Avril.

Avril Lavigne - Best Damn Thing

May 26th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Media, Music

Anyone who is vaguely in touch with the musical world will know that in the last couple of months Avril Lavigne released her new album ‘The Best Damn Thing’ and having sat around this morning listening to it I thought I’d comment on it for you to all read.

Since her last album Avril has married Derrick Whibley (lead singer of Sum 41) so his influence is on the album, in fact he produced a couple of the tracks. The album also includes Travis Barker doing some drumming on a couple of tracks and as a whole the album feels very Sum 41ish in parts, however it has poppier moments such as ‘Girlfriend’ which was the single.

As an album it’s not bad, songs don’t require thought nor amazing lyrics but it’s probably Avril’s best album yet (though part of me misses the poppiness of her first album), however the thing that bugs me is that for a girl who’s got married in the last year the songs don’t seem personal, a lot of the songs seem to be about relationships, for example the single Girlfriend ‘Hey hey, you you, I don’t like your girlfriend, I could be your girlfriend’ etc. I’m not convinced that it’s a personal song!

One good thing is that the normal version of the album isn’t Parental Advisery which means it’s accessible and open to all, however they have merely blanked out the words rather than replaced which is a shame because it means you get silly gaps, perhaps it’s just a marketing ploy to make people buy the more expensive ‘Deluxe’ version which is PG and includes a DVD. It’s just as well Blink 182 didn’t blank out naughty words on ‘Take Off Your Pants & Jacket’, there would be no words left!

The Church & Love

May 24th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Christianity, Church

I’ve been thinking a lot lately on love and the church, I’ve been pondering on it from various things that have happened at church and also we were talking about it at uni earlier in the context of ‘what is your dream’ (inspired by the Martin Luthur talk)

I think my dream is for the church to practice what it preaches, for churches to stop getting hung up on denomination, the place the alter is, the type of music, whether the worship leader puts in a chorus or whatever petty thing that bugs someone. My dream is for the church to love.

Let’s be honest here, throughout history the church has been pretty crap at loving, we’ve condemmed people, done crusades (to kill people), had church splits over silly things (and some major theological things) and people have stormed out over some silly arguement over a building, yet in a faith that tells us to ‘love our neighbour as ourselves’ what’s gone wrong? why do we find this teaching described by Jesus as ‘the most important commandment’ (along side loving God) so difficult?

The obvious answer is that we’re only human and humans argue and for some reason we are fairly incapable of discussing things instead we seem to resort to more dramatic effects.

In my third year of uni I have the option of ending up with a ‘rev’ in front of my name which initially I thought could be quite cool, however the more I think about it the less I like the idea, perhaps mainly because I don’t feel it’s something God is calling me too but also because of the way the church bugs me, yes being a ‘rev’ could potentially help me change the church but the lack of love and tollerance annoys me in churches.

However I am keen for this blog not to become a slagging match of me and the church because let’s face it that just makes me a hypocrite, how many church problems would be solved if people actually talked rather than slagged off? (a few!)

So what’s my solution? Do I have some new revolutionary method to fix the church and all it’s problems? Nope, my answer is simple yet difficult; ‘Love’

In 1 Corinthians 13 Paul writes the famous passage read at numerous weddings, people take it to be all lovey dovey but it’s not, in context Paul is annoyed at the church in Corinth because they’re not loving, he describes love because they’re not doing it. Read the passage I’m quoting below and put a ‘you’re not’ at the end, i.e. love is patient, you’re not.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

After this verse he moves on talking about how spiritual gifts will pass away but how love should remain, perhaps a letter like this sent to some of our churches which are so hyped up about tongues wouldn’t go amiss (but that’s a tangent).

The point is if we had all this into our churches wouldn’t they be better places? If we were patient, kind, slow to anger, not self seeking, not keeping records of wrongs.

How about if we had a church made of these, a church that didn’t have leaders who seek their own glory, a church of people willing to help the homeless or person who comes in scruffy rather than turn their nose, a church that didn’t get annoyed because there was a wrong note during a song, or there wasn’t a hymn.

As a church of Jesus Christ we need to focus on Jesus, we need to focus on Jesus’ key command of love, whoever sang the lyrics ‘love changes everything’ was right, love is amazing and it’s such a shame that 2000 years after Jesus preached the message of love we haven’t got it sorted, in fact we are so far from it it’s unbelievable.

Start The Fire

So to anyone reading this blog I am asking you to look at yourself, look at anyone you’re close to and look at the passage from Paul, would he say to you ‘patient…you’re not’ or ‘you’re not’ to any of them or would he say ‘actually you’re not bad at that’. I find it odd that in Galations 5 patience, love, self contro and gentleness are included in the fruits of the Spirit, not to say that people in our churches who don’t have patience aren’t filled with the spirit but perhaps like all of us focus and prayer needs to be put into being patient.

What I’m saying is this, approach your church with love, approach it with all the things Paul talks about in Corinthians, avoid those petty arguements, accept church for what it is, go to church ready or willing to worship God, or perhaps ready to be comforted by people there if you’ve had a bad week. Too often our churches split and argue because of a lack of love or because we continuously forget the 2 most important commands according to Christ ‘Love your neighbour’ and ‘love God’

Let’s love…

Bad Religion New Album

May 17th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Media, Music

Yesterday I discovered that in July Bad Religion will release their first album for almost three, years they have a new song called ‘Honest Goodbye’ on their myspace, it’s got the same feel as The Empire Strikes first which means it’s promising, I still find it vaguely amusing that after almost 20 years of ‘God Slagging’ Bad Religion haven’t come up with any arguements no one else has already used! oh well…

The God Slot

May 15th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Christianity, Youth Work

I’m sure many of you reading this have heard of a ‘God Slot’, for those that haven’t let me explain, many churches have what is described as an ‘Open Youth Group’ a regular group which happens where young people can play table tennis, pool, playstation or whatever, the God slot is usually the last ten minutes, once the young people are nicely lurred into a false sense of security the fun is taken away and the God slot begins!

That rather cynical description however is perhaps unfair, and as a youth worker when I do God slots I try and make them interactive, fun and relevant, however I still question the need for them, and the more I learn at Oasis about Youth Work the more I question the need and I think more and more I am beginning to think that there isn’t a need and that often this ‘God Slot’ can hinder the youth work, particually with un-churched kids.

Let’s face it, the last thing a young person wants to do is leave their game of Grand Turismo and listen to something about a God they don’t even believe in, yes some Christian young people would want to (and that’s awesome!), however I think perhaps the way of informing these unchurched young people about God is through ‘Informal Education’

Informal Education (my current essay topic) is basically education through conversation, so the talks you have around a pool table or whatever. In his book on Detached Work Richard Passmore talks about a conversation he has with some kids in a part that moves onto Christianity, often an informal open chat is far more informative for a young person than a ten minute ramble/ God Slot.

I guess this is all thoughts at the moment but comments would be apreciated, what did you think of God slots when you were younger? or perhaps you experience them now? do you think they’re needed?

Procrastinating 2

May 15th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Just For Fun

I’m still avoiding the essay which is now about a 3rd of the way, I really need to get it done today but the internet provides so many distractions. I’ve so far managed to watch the new Linkin Park video (good video but the song just isn’t Linkin Park as we know them), I’ve msn’d a lot and even added artwork so some of my albums on itunes.

procrastinating

May 13th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Just For Fun

This afternoon I’ve been procrastinating in order to avoid finishing off my practice recording essay for uni, it’s silly cos there’s only 200 words to do, however I have discovered…

1 - Tumbledown - link - a cool country/acoustic project by MxPx lead singer - chilled music

2- Repaired Stuarts laptop - ridden with spyware and other stuff it’s now squeeky clean!

3- Realised song writing is currently dry…haven’t written anything for ages…need inspiration

Anyhoo, only 2 (and a bit) essays until the end of term, I might try and do a whole one on monday that’ll leave me 1 and 3 weeks which would be nice but I guess we shall see what monday brings!
