New Songs & Good Charlotte Album

March 30th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Media, Music

Hello Visitors!

I have updated the mp3 player with a series of new tracks including an acoustic version of ‘When your heart stops beating’ by Plus 44, A new song from Spunge called ‘Some suck, some rock’, ‘Cancer’ by My Chemical Romance, and ‘Misery’ and ‘Something else’ by Good Charlotte from their new album ‘Good morning revival’ plus a track from ‘I am the avalanche’. Enjoy

Good Charlotte - Good morning revival

After hearing a couple of the more ‘poppy’ songs from the new Good Charlotte album on their myspace page I was persuaded by Tesco (who I am now avoiding), to buy it and after the disappointing ‘Chronicles of life and death’ a few years ago I was very surprised. I expected, as with Chronicles there to be a few songs that gripped me and a lot of crap, however the whole album is pretty good. It contains a selection of pop-punk music more similar in style to their amazing previous album ‘The Young and the Hopeless’ but with a darker, more serious touch, unlike Chronicles it doesn’t seem to be one big experiment but one well produced, good album.
Worth a purchase!

The ‘Just do it’ Effect

March 25th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Youth Work

Yes, a jokey cartoon to the left to introduce my blog however that’s the end of the laughs.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the way we promote sex in this country and the more I think about it the more I disagree with it. There seem to be countless posters around Youth Clubs, Colleges, Schools and hospitals and adverts on radio and TV which promote safe sex, which is a good idea, however these adverts also actively promote what I call the ‘Nike Effect’, by which I mean the approach to sex that as long as you’re doing it safely then ‘just do it!’. The more I think about this the more it bugs me, it’s great that the government and NHS are trying to make sure young people are aware of AIDS and infections however how many young people know that pretty much all methods of contraception are only 99% effective? Do the government share this with their condom adverts? nope, and perhaps I’d have less of an issue if they were promoting safe sex when two people are in a loving relationship but this poster to the right really gets on my nerves.

It seems to me that this particular campaign isn’t just promoting safe sex but promoting one night stands, yes in the psters story the person knows the guy however it’s just about sex, just about a one night stand and I think this is the risk we’re running in the way we promote safe sex in this country. Not once is the idea of waiting promoted, nor even the idea of being in a loving relationship. Rather than trying to change the sexually flippant attitude of people the government seem to have embraced it and endorsed it. Yes, perhaps they see it as the best way and I’d agree that if young people are going to have sex then safe is by far the best option, but why don’t we inform of the advantages of waiting?

Many people would link this sexually flippant attitude to the low self-worth of many teenagers today and they may be right. However I also think it’s perhaps down to the expectation we put on them, if we expect young people to do drugs, have sex and be wreckless then they are (well some are), perhaps we should be more expectant of them.

Overall I think the sexually flippant attitude which we are promoting to young people is wrong, I think it’s important to promote safe sex but also to promote meaningful relationships, important to promote waiting as an option for safe sex. Love is not based on sex, sex is merely one of thousands of ways to show someone you love them, perhaps we should promote the idea that waiting is going to make that sign of love to someone that bit more special.

Lyrics for today

March 22nd, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Uncategorized

You said, “Jesus, please forgive me of my crimes
Sanctify this withered heart of mine
Stay with me until my life is through
And on that day please take me home with you”

[SPUNGE] Last Night

March 19th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Media, Music

It seems like ages since I’d been to a live gig and seeing Spunge last night at the waterfront, Norwich was a great was to end the live music break. If you don’t know what Spunge sound like there’s a few songs on the mp3 player to you left!

It’s the third time I’ve seen spunge and this was probably the best gig of theirs I’ve been to, it was energy filled, great music and some fun talking between band membes (which is always great), and then during the last song some of the bands ‘groupies’ went onto the stage from backstage to dance, some of the crowd climbed over the barriers to join them, so of course the bouncer stepped in, only to be taken and out attacked by Spunge’s roady who was detirmed to let fans join the band so in order to do so attacked the bouncer, although perhaps it wasn’t the best thing he could have done it shows dedication to fans :) I didn’t make it onto the stage but here are some photos.Everyone on stage the final song (guy in front is Spunge’s roady)

Do songs become our liturgy?

March 17th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Christianity, Church

As many of you will know typically I am fairly anti-liturgy (for want of a better phrase), my reasoning because it can often become parrot fashion, for example from my upbringing within an Anglican church I can recite the whole forgiveness prayer off the top of my head however having said it every week for 9 years I guess, perhaps more not once did it mean anything, it was parrot fashion to me.

The last year or so really I’ve pondered the same about songs, do we sing worship songs in church because we mean them or just because we like them? I felt challenged by God on this a while ago whilst driving and singing to Matt Redman, and I felt God challenging me to think if I meant what I was singing.

This has become a thought in my head once again recently so this blog is just a quick couple of thoughts on if we have made songs in church the new liturgy?

The reasons behind this is that often in churches we have the same songs week in, week out, perhaps a variety of songs that happen every so often but do we end up just singing without thinking? It’s easy to sing along to a song you know without thinking about the meaning of the words.

So here is my challenge, think about what you’re singing in church or what you’re saying, do you mean it? do you understand it? if not don’t sing it! If you don’t understand it perhaps ask someone what it means, old hymns for example confuse me (and bore me but that’s anoter story!)

Pot calling kettle black 2…

March 14th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Uncategorized

As promised here’s more thoughts…

I think however earlier I completely misunderstood the article in that I assumed it meant creating more nuclear weapons, however reading it I can’t make out if it does involve that or not. However if it does me stating ‘pot calling kettle black’ refers to Britain and the US going up in arms about Iraq and Nuclear weopons and more recently objecting to Korea carrying out a weaopon program whereas (If this is the case) here we are about to make more. It’s hypocritical.

To quote Tony Blair (or perhaps misquote depending if I understood the article or not)

I believe it is important that we recognise that, although it is impossible to predict the future, the one thing… that is certain, is the unpredictability of it.’

I don’t see that having nuclear weopans just in case will help anything other than giving us the power to destroy half the world. I don’t think that nuclear weopons are ever called for, nor any type of bomb, we complain at terrorists for blowing up trains and planes yet all we do is fight fire with fire, I’m sure to many people we are the bigger terrorists as a country.

C of E

March 12th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Christianity

Now it’s not very often I have anything particualy positive to say about the church of england but in reasearching my essay (which btw is horrible, I don’t like this essay) I found this article on bbc, we need more people like John Sentamu in the C of E, he has a lot of good ideas and a great Christian approach to things.

Why a secular society could be a good thing.

March 9th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Christianity

One thing I’ve been pondering on these last few weeks is the idea firstly that Great Britain is not really known as a ‘Christian Country’ though I guess on the official documentation it is, and to start with I guess my initial thoughts were that this was bad however the more I think on it the more I think that Britain being a secular country could be a very good thing, and not just good in general but good for Christians.

Yes, perhaps this is a slightly bizarre thought but it seems to me that because we’re known as a Christian country many people assume they’re Christians, they might only go to church once a year (if that) and not really believe in God but because of the country, or perhaps their parents or because they tick the ‘Christian’ box on the census they think their Christians, when actually they’re not! Of course this can hinder evangalism when Christians approach ‘Christians’ who say that they are Christian.

This perhaps is even more common to the Catholic church where people are literally born into, the catholic faith is inherited, however this leads to people calling themselves catholics with no real belief in God, no church going and just doing their own thing. In my opinion this isn’t what a true Catholic is and I’d hope the pope would agree with me on this one!

A Christian country in todays society has lead to people believing their Christians with no beliefs, and not following God, and on an even more controversal note I think many people who do go to churches use it as nothing more than a refuge, a place where they can feel part of or perhaps it’s even just used as a sunday thing.

Pete Ward discusses the idea that church as we know it is typically a watered down message with standard spirituality and middle-of-the-road music and I think he has a point. Not to say that all churches are like that but churches seem to be afraid of being daring, afraid of being audacious! (to use a buzz word), not to the point where church becomes nothing more than a show but to the point where Christianity is taught properly, not watering down a message in case it offends someone but aiming to challenge every aspect of a persons being.

As I have thought these things I am coming to the conclusion that laws which could either make us break them or compromise our faith are a good thing! The reason why is this: It would separate the mice from the mean, the ‘I say I’m a Christian’ from the Christians, perhaps losing people but at the same time gaining on fire, Christ serving Christians. Christianity thrives in the face of persecution, the first church grew rapidly despite it being illigal until the Roman Emporer Nero became one and legalised. I think the freedom to practice religion in Britain has led to Sunday Christians, people who pick and choose their Christianity rather than taking it on board, if being a Christian led to percecution those would fall away or become stronger in their faith.

The percecution of Christians in china because of law (I.e. it being illigal) has lead to the church growing from just 1 million in 1950 up to 80 million in 2002, church growth is estimated at 35,000 a day and here is my theory why. Desparate times cause for desparate measures, in Britain we don’t rely on God as much as we should, I don’t think we feel the need for miricles and wonders a lot of the time, we just like God as a comfort blanket, whereas Christians in china have to rely on God for their safety, for their lives, the same way Paul would have done when in prison or preaching to thousands. Jesus says if we ask he will answer, if we knock the door will be opened and I think when we reach a place when being a Christian means breaking the law in Britain we will see church growth, we will see God come alive as people have to place their faith in him.

Not to say that we don’t see God come alive in Britain as it is, I think and know God does perform miricles and there are a lots of Christians who live their lives for God completely however I think that a secular society could lead to even more of these, hence why I think it could be a good thing. Think about it, if you were faced with the option of giving up your faith or dying what would you choose?

The Number 23

March 4th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Media

The Number 23

On friday night I went to see ‘The Number 23′ which is the new film from Jim Carrey. I have to admit at first I thought that the chances of another good film with Jim being serious were seriously low but how wrong could I be!

Much like eternal sunshine of the spotless mind The number 23 is gripping and full of tension, and also like eternal sunshine it has a twist at the end which you’d never expect! A lot within the film addresses paranoia and reading a book that relates to you and does contain some quite dark stuff like suicide etc but towards the end brings some great morals forward from the film finishing off by quoting the verse from Numbers which says ‘Be sure your sin will find you out’, it even gives the bible reference!

The film is well worth seeing and I recommend all readers of this blog and all of your friends to go!
