Oh how Christians annoy me…

January 31st, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Christianity

I’ve signed up to the ‘challengeblasphemy’ forum and been posting a bit and happened to meantion the alpha course which resulted in one of the mods posting a 3000 word post telling us why the alpha course is very anti-Christian and is not saving people…oh dear! I think I’m gonna leave the forum before it annoys me too much!

The irony is that they’re probably being about as helpful to Christianity as blasphemy challenge are (the site their trying to stand up against!)!

"The Irrelevance For Street Preaching"

January 30th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Christianity, Church

Now before I start don’t think this is going to become a liberal ‘Let’s let people get on with it’ kind of blog because it’s not, and I believe that everyone needs Jesus more than life itself.

As I was wandering through Peterborough yesterday I saw a street preacher in full force, yelling about Jesus etc. Now before I build up stereotypes or even hint that all street preachers are all crazy over-the-top Christians living in the past, I’m going to add that I’ve actually spoke to this one in the past and his heart is in the right place, you can tell that he has a relationship with Jesus, however I think he’s 20 or so years behind the times!

Before I rant about how it’s irrelevant (perhaps) in todays society, I think that it’s worth meantioning that I do believe there is a biblical principal behind street preaching, after all John the Baptist preached about Jesus, Jesus stood on the side of the hill preaching and Paul stood up in numerous places preaching about Jesus….so why do we not need it today?

In my opinion perhaps street preacher’s aren’t irrelevant, but impersonal, they don’t bring anything to anyone. Jesus showed his love for people by healing them and I’d assume some of these people became saved!

I think in today’s society words like ‘Sin’ are jargon, along with grace and salvation. Hell is typically seen as either non-existant or a place containing all the things Christians are against; meaningless sex, drunkenness etc. so Hell is seen as a ‘fun place to go’, people don’t think that Hell won’t have love, won’t having ‘meaningful relationships’ wont have ‘happiness’.

So where do street preachers fit into society? To be honest I think if you’re a middle-class person who’s had a bad few weeks but you understand all the jargon that church is you could quite possibly hear the preacher and think ‘Oh crap, what have I been playing at’, I think, to an extent I find it inspiring for somene to be so open about their faith, yet at the same time it makes me cringe.

Street Preachers for today, I believe are found in projects like Reality, they’re in Soul in the City, they’re Street Pastors, they’re in individuals willing to give a damn about someone, individuals willing to stop their ‘busy’ time to help out someone and practically show the love of Christ, yes sometimes you have to speak about Jesus, but it’s good to establish a common ground first, good to be personal.

Thanks for reading
P.S. Ben I’ve sorted the media player for you :)

I’m apalled - Your Response Is Needed!

January 29th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Christianity

Okay, it’s not very often something appalls me as a Christian so much that I go onto a rant but here we go, I have just discovered a website called Blasphemy Challenge (blasphemychallenge.com)

Here is their challenge video:

If you didn’t watch it let me tell you what it’s about, these athiests, who hate religion, especially Christianity caught on that Mark says blasphemy against the holy spirit damns you straight to hell so they are challenging mainly Young People to denounce the Holy Spirit on video, upload it to youtube and just to top it off they are then giving each person who does it a free DVD!

I don’t think I have ever been so shocked, www.standforchrist.org is a website which has sprung up against this website and includes this interview with the man in charge of blasphemy challenge

Basically in this TV interview the man in charge accuses Christianity of forcings it’s views on young people who don’t want it and they offer a chance to rebel, the irony is the double standards, they are far more tempting and indoctrinating to young people than Christianity will ever be, we don’t offer free dvd’s to people who become Christians!

Oddly enough the Blasphemy Challenge website has no contact details on, but a quick WHOIS search gives you this

So my challenge to readers of this blog is this, the email address of the domain owner is: bflemming238@earthlink.net

You can also find his address on the link I posted just above

So please, do whatever you can!

Gay Adoption Debate

January 25th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Christianity, Church

Yes my promised post on homosexuality is on its way, however this week’s discussion in the news seems to be the ‘Gay Adoption Debate’, the catholics started it, claiming they wanted to be exempt from having to allow gay couples to adopt from their adoption places.

For once I agree with the catholics (and the anglicans who later jumped in to the debate), I think that gay marriage is one thing (at least it’s not currently church serviced!), however gay adoption is a complete no no,. Firstly agreeing to the gay adoption would go against the catholics faith and indeed most Christians and I don’t think anyone should be required to sacrifice their beliefs, and in fact I think in the next few years as this country goes more and more PC we will see Christians having a tough time and probably being put in jail for various reactions to things, whether its refusing to marry a gay couple or whatever.

My personal view on gay adoption is that its wrong, initially because I’m a Christian but secondally I’m thinking about the social implimentations this would have for the adopted children.

For starters when the ‘birds and bees’ conversation comes up how are they going to explain that a mummy is needed? Isn’t it going to confuse the poor child a bit, who of course probably thinks that both daddy’s are it’s parents (or both mummy’s).

Also there is the balance of children being looked after, yes in this country there are many children with single mums or dads, and some do get to see their other parent others don’t, but I think that God designed parents to be in pairs, one male, one female, hence adam and eve not adam and steve. I think that each parent has something to offer to a child, for example a Dad typically finds it difficult to relate to a girl, particually an adolescent one about things like peroids and make-up and other girlie issues, whereas a mum would, the same goes for guys and guy issues and Dad’s. There’s something to be said for having a male and female parent, yes not all married hetrosexual parents are good ones but I think the principal for good parenting and a good balance of male and female influence on a child is there.

The other thing I’m thinking is ‘is it really fair to the child?’, as the child reaches adolescence lots of changes take place, will a child coming out as straight to his gay parents have an effect on the family? (that was a side thought). At that age a teenager is questioning all sorts of things, discovering their identity and fitting into groups at school, with friends being very important, gay parents could be a huge problem here. As I’m sure many of you readers are aware being ‘gay’ is often used as an insult in schools, if someone is camp they are accused of being gay and I’m pretty sure a young person having gay parents is going to cause huge issues at school with mickey takers etc.

Yes research has shown that children adopted by gay parents don’t end up worse off but I think overall the implimentations of this on a child and then on them as a teenager could be huge, they could be socially excluded through no fault of their own.

I think that the catholics are right to object and I think that the whole gay adoption thing is out of order and ridiculous!

Youth Work Post - The Value Of Games

January 21st, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Youth Work

For many people Youth Work is seen as something dossy, some people see it as invaluable. Many Christian’s see youth work containing games as pointless, especially if all there is is pool table and some table tennis, however in this blog I will attempt to enlighten those poor mislead people…

The Open Youth Group

This is quite possibly the most commonly mis-understood Youth Group, yes it is typically a pool table, table tennis table and tuck shop and perhaps a ‘God Slot’ (*cringes*) at the end consisting of a ten minute message, yes many Christians, on the outside might see it as pointless, however it’s actually very valuable for several reasons…

Outreach - 99% of young people would not listen to someone preaching at them if they wern’t a Christian, they’ll see the person preaching as seeing themselves as more important, boring and irrelevant…here comes the open youth group, although no real preaching is done the youth leader can get to know the young people, and the young people will begin to see the youth leader as not a boring weirdo christian but someone who actually cares about them (most youth workers genuinely do care about the young people), this in time will provide opportunities for the youth leader to talk to them informally about God, Jesus and Faith and perhaps invite them to an evangelical youth service

Informal Education - Leading on from what I was saying one of the key values for Youth Work is widely noted as ‘Informal Education’, a game of pool is ideal for this as it presents an opportunity to chat with young people about various things which can vary from girls (or guys), to faith to school or issues at home, the pool table is an essential youth work tool.

The Silly Games…explained
The other criticism many people make is about silly games and that they are ‘pointless’. However although they often don’t have meaning…though sometimes offer powerful illustrations, they do work very well at bringing a group together, it doesn’t matter how long a group has been formed an ice breaker or game has value, it will make everyone feel part of the group, if the ice breaker involves questions such as ‘if you were a vegetable what would you be and why?’ it gives each person an equal chance to speak, will make people feel confortable, and if there is a new person will give them the same feeling of being part of the group. This is an ideal lead in to a group because it means that when serious discussion comes up, be it about God or sex everyone will feel like they have an equal say, otherwise those who were more dominating at the beginning may make the rest feel like they have no say, this game breaks down those barriers, if a person has already spoke they are far more likely to speak later on in the group.

Of course this also raises the point that it is important to have discussion with groups rather than spoon feed, a sermon has a time and a place and sometimes they are appropriate but discussion about the points in it are essential!

Disclaimer: For anyone who reads this and now thinks that Youth Work is only done because of the phsycological effects things have, yes they are a factor but as a youth worker you do genuinly care about your youth groups!

I hope this blog clears up minconceptions about youth work!

Big Brother - Jade Out!

January 19th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Media

Those who have read my blog before know that I am very ‘un-interested’ by Big Brother, the whole prospect just doesn’t grab me!

Link

However having commuted to London Wednesday and Thursday I got involved by reading what the free London papers had to say.

To be honest I think Jade being evicted tonight with 82% of the vote is no surprise considering the amount of people she outraged, however I think this is the ideal press for C4, they wanted more people to tune in and what better than a big arguement and lots of press coverage.

I’m not going to comment on whether I think Jade was racist or not because I didn’t see it, however I think perhaps these celebrities go into the Big Brother house without realising that the whole idea is a big freak show! Let’s face it, when channel 4 put people in the Big Brother house they want conflict, they want arguements, they want relationships to spring up…anything to attract people to watch, if you put a group of middle class C of E Church attenders in it wouldn’t be interesting.

Yes I think racism is wrong and the indian actress was fine to be upset if she felt insulted but to go into the big brother house without expecting to end up stressed, have people snap at you and insult you is silly. It’s what makes Big Brother, people watch it because it’s like a live Soap Opera!

‘Because the devil makes things fun!’

January 18th, 2007 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Christianity, Media

Quote from hmv.co.uk on their promotion of the new Fall Out Boy Album

Jan 2007

Pre-order now and recieve an exclusive set of limited edition Fall Out Boy tarot cards! This is an HMV.co.uk only offer and is not available in stores.

Full Page Here

This seems to keep popping up with artists recently, the new Tenacious D album ‘The Pick Of Destiny’ included some in their deluxe edition.

Wikipedia says that tarot cards are;

When tarot cards are used for divination or for accessing the unconscious, the cards are typically shuffled by either the subject, or a third-party reader, as a deck and laid out in one of a variety of patterns, often called “spreads”. They are then interpreted by the reader or a third-party performing the reading for the subject. These might include the subject’s thoughts and desires (known or unknown) or past, present, and future events.

Each card has a variety of symbolic meanings that have evolved over the years. Custom or themed tarot decks exist, especially in the United States, which have even more specific symbolism. The minor arcana cards have astrological attributions that can be used as general indicators of timing in the year, based on the Octavian calendar, and the court cards may signify different people in a tarot reading, with each suit’s “nature” providing hints about that person’s physical and emotional characteristics.

It goes on to say…

Some schools of occult thought or symbolic study, such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, consider the tarot to function as a textbook and mnemonic device for their teachings

It worries me that this kind of thing is becoming ‘cool’ and ‘popular’ and even more so that they are being given away with CD’s to people who may be un-suspecting, yes because they have them they’re not going to use them but they may well find out what they’re for and become curious, especially the age many of the buyers of both the Fall Out Boy and the Tenacious D album.
It’s something that really shouldn’t be encouraged and making such things a novelty item is quite serious, people start off with small things and they lead into other things, usually someone involved with the occult starts somewhere.

I aprechiate this is a very odd almost ‘charasmatic church style’ post but it’s slightly concerning to me!
