It’s halloween…
And with that very distasteful title and caption I enter into the debate!
In the last few weeks the issue of Muslims covering their faces seems to be everywhere, Jack Straw started it, a teacher got fired for refusing to remove one, the sun claims they snuck someone through an airport who wasn’t asked to remove the mask to check passport photos and various others have joined in to comment and I guess it’s my turn!Firstly I don’t pretend to know much about them, I don’t know how religiously important it is, I do however know that not all muslims where them and have heard that it is not the women’s responsibility to stop a man lusting but the mans, however I have heard the opposite and I guess that it various on the type of Islam much like alcohol or baptism within denominations of Christianity!
However my title of this blog does perhaps reflect my view, I am on the ‘get rid of them’ approach, I think that when Tony Blair commented that they separate them from being part of a community I agree, they have a very unapproachable look about them and let’s face it, it makes someone look like they’re about to go rob a bank. We live in a society where shopping malls have banned caps from being worn (probably because they’re mostly worn by chavs!) but this raises an interesting point, if it’s so they can see faces on CCTV then surely muslims should be made to take them off?
To be perfectly honest I don’t think I have much to add, I think though if they want to be part of society they should probably remove them! Anyway more serious blogs soon…

do u think its because society is afraid of the different?
good post, markus.
as an apendage - the veil is a cultural thing not a religious thing. It mentions somewhere in the Qu’an about women `protecting their facade` or something like that - can’t remember exact wording.
It’s mainly the Pakistani/Afghani regional trends of Islam that use the veil but generrally, all other strands of Islam don’t use the veil.
I agree with what you said :- we should respect cultural diversity, but when it comes to passport checks and cctv, it’s blatently an issue of domestic homeland security, and at the risk of sounding racist, why the hell should we and our families and friends comprimise our national security because some extremists (not radicalists) demand rights in this country beyond the limits of our civil responsibilities and legal system?!
