Some Thoughts…AVA & The Awesome Generation

May 28th, 2006 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Christianity, Media, Music

Firstly I thought I’d meantion that the amazing album ‘We Don’t Need To Whisper’ from Angels & Airwaves is number 6 in the album charts for this week and if you don’t own it, go buy it because it’s awesome!

Secondly, following several recent things I think it’s time I had a comment on ‘Proclaimers Church’ and ‘Awesome’ formally talked about by Benvolio,. Firstly for those folks reading this in Peterborough or indeed the rest of the world Proclaimers is a church in Norwich, think Hillsong and your there! Including an austrailian or two!

Now to comment on a few things which Ben has meantioned for starters ‘Church without the boring bits’ a quote used by Proclaimers to talk about their church, now personally I can see where they’re coming from on this, stereotypically church is boring, people picture pews and hymn books and organs, and the younger generation (who I believe are probably the main outreach area of Proclaimers) are not looking (typically) for organs and hymn books, I grew up with them and they’re not for me! So if I heard ‘Church without the boring bits’ I’d assume that it meant lively.

Now to comment on the ‘Audacious’ to the ‘Awesome Generation’ transition, at the end of the day it’s a name! Churches have different names, youth groups have different names and they don’t really describe the group, for example my old youth group ‘After 8s’, doesn’t describe us, we’re not minty chocolates but it’s a name!

Audacious means to be bold (dictionary.com) which as Christians we certainly should be, now awesome on the other hand means ‘inspiring awe’ so what do I think ‘Awesome generation’ literally means? I think that for starters (as previously meantioned) the ‘generation’ part must be talking to every Christian regardless of age, as for awesome, I think perhaps they have a point, as Christians people should notice us for being different and surely being ‘awe inspiring Christians’ isn’t a bad thing? If you admire something you normally want to know what caused it which surely gives us an opportunity to talk about God!

To find out what Proclaimers is actually about I guess we have to look at their ‘Statement Of Faith’ which is as follows (taken from proclaimerschurch.com)

• We believe the Bible is God’s Word. It is inspired, infallible, accurate, authoritative and applicable to our every day lives.

• We believe in one eternal God who is the Creator of all things. He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. He is totally loving and completely holy.

• We believe that sin has separated each of us from God and His purpose for our lives.

• We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ as both God and man is the only One who can reconcile us to God. He lived a sinless and exemplary life, died on the cross in our place, and rose again to prove His victory and empower us for life.

• We believe that in order to receive forgiveness and the ‘new birth’ we must repent of our sins, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and submit to His will for our lives.

• We believe that in order to live the holy and fruitful lives that God intends for us, we need to be baptised in water and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enables us to use spiritual gifts, including speaking in tongues, which is the initial evidence of baptism in the Holy Spirit.

• We believe that God has individually equipped us so that we can successfully achieve His purpose for our lives that is to worship God, fulfil our role in the Church and serve the community in which we live.

• We believe that God wants to heal and transform us so that we can live healthy and prosperous lives in order to help others more effectively.

• We believe that our eternal destination of either Heaven or hell is determined by our response to the Lord Jesus Christ.

• We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is coming back again as He promised.

So what about the statement of faith? Dodgy?
To be honst I say no! Everything I see there is biblical and is what most churches believe, perhaps if you want to be picky you could query the ’spiritual gifts, including speaking in tongues’ because of the tongues emphasis which isn’t unbiblical but it’s good to remember that the bible says not everyone will speak in tongues! But other than that which isn’t really anything nothing wrong with the statement of faith!

If you open the ‘Statement Of Faith’ PDF the first part reads ‘Our mission is to reach people for Christ and influence culture by building a large Church in Norwich’

hmm, culture, the whole ‘Church Culture’/'Youth Culture’ thing always make me feel slightly concerned, because it’s good to remember that Church is about God, Jesus and nothing else!

Culture means “the typical behavior patterns of the things around us” and for me, once again I don’t see a problem with influencing culture, after all as blogged previously romans tells us not to fit in with our culture, Christ tells u to spread the good news to the world, surely if we spread the Gospel and people become Christians that is going to change the culture we live in?

Benvolio wrote this in context to ‘Air Strip One Church’ which to be perfectly honest I don’t know much about however, he says

‘I cannot help but feel that Awesome is doing the same - being as loud as it can in congratulating itself on the sheer numbers within church and not focused at all on the people the church is supposed to reach’

So? Perhaps awesome is being as loud as it can, however that’s style! Some churches have acoustic guitars, some organs, I’ve known one to have violins and pianos, awesome having a ‘UNITED’ style rock band doesn’t make it anything more than style. As for not focused on all the people the Church is supposed to reach, from my experience of Proclaimers they seem to be doing what Jesus taught, they’ve been going out and helping the community to show the love of God (Awesome Action), they go into the city and try and get people to their services, ok, perhaps the style isn’t appealing to all, for example I very much doubt my grandma would enjoy it or the volume of it, but they’re targeting a key group which to be perfectly honest most Churches don’t have a clue about reaching, Proclaimers and Awesome for all the things people might question is at least getting off it’s arse to go out into the community and get people into their Church with the aim not to steal from other churches, Mr Rawls (pastor) once said ‘We’re not in the game of sheep shuffling’, a term which made me laugh but it means they’re there to reach the lost!’

To conclude and finalise this rather longer than intended blog I’d say that belief-wise Proclaimers seems fine, style wise, although it’s not for me, lots of young people can obviously connect with it which is good and yes, perhaps there are bad bits of the church but there are bad bits of every church, and it’s down to opinion, kinda back to the ‘you say tom-a-to, I say tom-ato’ kinda thing. I’m personally not sold to the ‘Rock band worship’ church but I’m not sold to traditional organ church either. However any Church that does what Christ calls us to do shouldn’t be critisized for doing so, I am in no position to critisize a church which I haven’t been to a huge amount of times so perhaps based on that my blog is worth nothing other than being my thoughts. Blogulation over!

P.S. Sometime soon I intend on blogging on the ‘Hillsong UNITED’ style Church, the Careforce area group meet up (including peddle boats!) and more!

"Calling a generation to stand for Christ"

May 25th, 2006 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Christianity

“Calling A Generation To Stand For Christ”

ok, so that’s the ‘Slogan’ if you like chosen for The Point for the rest of this year I guess so I was thinking about it and thought I’d share some thoughts.

For me the whole ‘Calling a generation to stand for Christ’ reminds me of the sort of stuff that Proclaimers Church, Norwich came out with in their Awesome, and I think perhaps we’re using it in the same kind of context, to say to the young people of Peterborough ‘Jesus is calling you to stand for Him’ However I think the thing to remember from this phrase is that it isn’t just calling the young generation, I think it’s talking to every single Christian and just being a reminder that we should stand for Christ which is one of the many things the bible teaches us. I think that although today in the UK we’re not persecuted for being Christians people are so caught up with Political Correctness (or political crapness!) that they’re scared to speak their faith in case they offend someone it’s pathetic! We need to stand for Christ, we should be speaking out about Jesus regardless of who we’re speaking too, everyone needs Jesus end of story! It’s pathetic to see vicars who go into schools and barely meantion God, it’s a shame that so many Christians try and ‘fit in’ with society, God is calling us to stand out, Romans says ‘Do not become so adapted to your culture that you fit in without thinking, instead fix your eyes on God’ (Romans 12:2a, The Message), that’s what we should be doing, Christians should be speaking out for Christ regardless, living lives where people can see the love of God and I think a lot of Christians need to start believing in God’s healing power again! I went to a ‘healing service’ at the Cathedral a while ago, they asked for people to come down the front and all they prayed for them was that the doctors would sort them out, God will heal instantly and I think so many Christians need to re-discover this, Jesus didn’t say ‘Go out into the world and take people to the doctors’, he said ‘We shall do greater things in his name than even Jesus did’ that means in the name of Jesus we can heal people, we can raise the dead, cast out demons and do so much more in Jesus’ name! Ramble over!

Woo!

May 22nd, 2006 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Media, Music

Quite a good day today really compared to last Monday! My new radio was installed and fitted by insurance company which means I have music again in the car, and not just any old music now because….

I got the Angels and Airwaves album today and it’s pretty awesome, some really good songs and amazing lyrics, here are some from a song called ‘A Little’s Enough’

When all is said and done
Will we still feel pain inside?
Will the stars go away with night?
Sharp smile for the morning light?
It’s like the best dream to have
Where every thing is not so bad
Every tear is so alone
Like God himself is coming home to say

I
I can do any thing
If you want me here
And I can fix any thing
If you let me near
What are those secrets now
The church is scared to tell
I’d whisper them all aloud
So you can hear your self

The trees were the first sign
The deepest blue, the clearest sky
The silence came with the brightest eyes
And turned water into wine
The children ran to see
The parents stood in disbelief
And those who knew braced for the ride
The earth itself it came alive to say

I
I can do any thing if you want me here
And I can fix anything if you let me near
What are those secrets now
The church is scared to tell
I whisper them all aloud so you can hear your self

I’m sorry I have to say it but you look like you’re sad
Your smile is gone; I’ve noticed it bad
The cure is if you let in just a little more love
I promise you this A Little’s Enough

They’re pretty cool and almost Christian! Certainly references to Jesus there!

Under a month till I get to see them in Birmingham too! Yay!

I think that’s blogging done for the moment, sorry to blog reader expecting an interesting ramble, to which I say: ‘Go buy the angels and airwaves album!’! I will ramble next time something ‘Grinds my gears’!

The Da Vinci Code - A Christian’s Joy!

May 17th, 2006 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Christianity

It strikes me that every so often something comes out and becomes a bit of a Christian band wagon, there was Harry Potter where people said that it was bad and portraying magic as good and evil instead of just evil (when fairy tales have done that very thing and no-one has said anything), more recently a Christian bandwagon of the ‘40 Days Of Purpose’ a book, which in my opinion very repetative and a boring read spun off a load of Christian small groups and a string of sermons, and now we get to the film ‘The Da Vinci Code’, which is one of those things which although written as fiction Christians seem to think it’s their job to point out to everyone that the Fiction isn’t true! Ok, it’s a good excuse to talk to people about Jesus and God and who Jesus really was but in my opinion the da vinci code is just another bandwagon for Christians to jump on, half will probably say it’s just fiction and a chance to talk to people about God others will go mad and say it’s satanic forgetting that it is fiction! Even Tom Hanks says the book is a merely fiction! And what’s so great about the book anyway, I’ll admit to not having fully read it but I find it badly written and difficult to get into! I guess I’m just hoping that the churches will be able to use it as an opportunity to tell people about God without constantly reminding them a fictional book is, infact, fiction!

A Ponder…

May 16th, 2006 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Articles, Just For Fun

So, I spend some time of my life reading other peoples blogs such as Ben and Laura’s among others and everyone seems to have ponders and deep bloggy things going on and then I click back to my boring blog with nothing particually exciting on it, so, in search of inspiration and something to have a deep ponder on I click to my old friend BBC news, so what did I find on my blogitual journey? Well, lets see where this goes…

To start with I found a story of BBC wages being leaked , wonderful! The leak tells us how much people like Chris Moyles and Terry Wogen get paid, do I care? not really? why should anyone be bothered about how much they get paid? it’s obviously some ridiculous amount and it just doesn’t interest me.

So I moved on with my journey and next I came across and it happened to be an article on Big Brother , a wonderful program thought of by Channel 4 where we can waste our lives away for a month of so on our sofa watching some idiots also waste their life away, sleep with eachother, fall out and talk complete crap for a few hours a day! Which leads me to the question, how can channel 4 make so much money from it? Do people have nothing better to do? Apparantly not!

So feeling tired and dissapointed at my ponderings for the evening, and bored with the BBC website I decided it was probably time for sleep and perhaps to finish by giving a quick meantion to the programme which was on this evening about Prince Charles and the Princes Trust which was quite interesting and my opinion of him being a boring, useless old(ish) guy has changed, however a few bits got me slightly annoyed (not at him but at some of the kids they interviews), several of these kids said their parents couldn’t speak english, now, I don’t have a problem at all with people coming into this country but if they’re going to do it and live her they should at least learn the language!!!

Anyway on that note, goodnight bloggers

A lovely surprise…

May 15th, 2006 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Uncategorized

So I woke up this morning, got out of bed, went out to my car, put in the laptop and thought ‘Hang on, there’s glass on my seat, hang on the passenger side windows are open, hang on, my radios gone *insert word of choice but not too bad here*’

Someone had thought it would be fun to break into my car over night and nick my radio, I love people so much! So I go in and call the police who put me on hold with a geordie who says ‘Please hold’ every so often and plays crappy music the rest of the time, and eventually I get through to someone, then I get through and they say they’ll send someone, 8 hours later they do, he looks at the car, says there’s no blood and there wont be fingerprints and …leaves. For once though insurance companies surprised me, window was fixed by autoglass by 6 and I’m getting a new radio fitted and delivered next monday (better than the one I had) and no excess to pay because it was theft!

Enjoy some pics of the damage…

The Broken WindowThe Stereo Shaped Hole

However the CD played did contain some Matt Redman so who knows, God may be able to save them!

This Mornings Service

May 7th, 2006 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Youth Work

So this moring the Youth of Park Road were leading, we were doing the drama, the illustrations, the music and the response/prayer thingy and I was doing the sermon! It’s so relieving that it’s done because it takes so much effort to put it all together what with band practices, sorting out dramas, trying to get them to think of ideas and putting it into an order, let alone writing the sermon but it went so well, the young people were awesome!

The Music group we put together consisted of Chris, a drummer who has never drummed before! He just sat down at the first practice and was just tapping around to a song and…wow! instant drummer, he had such good rythm and hardly needed anything teaching! we stuck in a bonus song in the end this morning and they coped with the spontanaety reallly well!
The rest of the music went great too Charlotte on piano did really well as did our singers and laura on bongos!

The other parts they led went really well too and I dont think my sermon went to badly either, my first ever sermon in front of a whole church! Scary but it went well, I think previous talks helped me get to the stage of being ready for the whole church!

On another note Oasis visited the church on wednesday and pretty much said yes! Looks like I’m in Peterborough for another 2 years, still waiting Oasis confirmation though!

Pray Today!

May 3rd, 2006 by Mark Tiddy Posted in Just For Fun

ok, for those who don’t know how I ended up here etc here’s a brief summary, this time last year I was at college in sunny yarmouth, loads of friends and I had applied to do a gap year with careforce, so they sent me to look at a placement in yorkshire and it didn’t feel lke it was where God wanted me, and because of a whole load of other things I then turned down a peterborough placement before looking with the idea of perhaps getting a nicely paid job at haven selling caravans (sounds a bit boring now but it’s very well paid!) or just doing something locally, so a couple of weeks later I’m being prayed for and God tells me to contact peterborough and that it’s where he wants me next year, i visit and God confirms that and september I came to peterborough to work with Park Road Baptist and CROPS, which brings me to now…

I have applied and been accepted onto the Oasis course in Christian youth minsitry next year, during this course you have a placement and Park Road have applied to keep me on which would mean another 2 years in Peterborough, today someone is going to visit the church from Oasis to see if they think it’s suitable so guys if you could pray for this I’d really aprechiate it, nothing specific but that God will make his will clearly known to me, oasis and the church, because at the end of the day much as I’d like to stay in Peterborough I’ll go whereever God wants me to go.
